ODDS ARE, YOU’LL HAVE A FANTASTIC TIME.

Wagers start at just $2, and with smart strategies and handicapping, a day at Hawthorne can be as profitable as it is fun. And betting is easier than you think. For simple tips, download Hawthorne’s Betting Card, or visit nrta.com.

Smart betting strategy and sound handicapping can make a day at the races not only fun, but profitable, as well. Horseracing is different from other forms of gambling, because you’re not betting against the house - you’re betting against the other fans. And it’s easy.

1. When you arrive, be sure to pick up a program for the day’s races. Study it carefully, and use it each time you place your bets. You’ll find out the history of every horse racing that day as well as other useful tips.

2. About 10 minutes before each race, take a look at the horses, jockeys and trainers assembling on the track. Do they look ready to burst out of the gate, or a little sleepy and stiff?

3. The illuminated tote board in the infield, as well as the TVs, tells you how others are placing their bets. The horse with the most money is the favorite, but keep in mind, favorites only win about one third of the time.

4. Then, place your bet.
